A new detention memo for one of the Oath Keepers defendants charged with seditious conspiracy sheds more light on the group’s plans for J6.

While Rhodes stood outside the Capitol directing his troops into battle (albeit not very effectively) another member of the team, Edward Vallejo, was standing by across the Potomac with a cache of weapons and ammunition.

Public comment at city council meetings throughout Ventura County often feature a man with a cowboy hat who introduces himself with “good evening! My name is Bruce Boyer. I’m candidate for Sheriff here in Ventura County…” Boyer, often dressed with a Gadsden flag t-shirt underneath a black blazer and a black Stetson, mouths off about “defeating the sanctuary state rebellion” to conspiracy theories regarding a mass shooting in Thousand Oaks. Some might think his views are fringe and inconsequential, but for over a decade Boyer has tried and sometimes succeeded in influenced laws at the municipal and even state level. He’s even tried to change who can run for Sheriff in California and nearly delayed an election. In an era of right wing revolt against local, state and national government, Boyer’s tactics are becoming more common and are worth studying.

On the first anniversary of the Capitol Riot of 2021, a group of about 40 pro-Trump rally-goers went to Beverly Gardens Park in Beverly Hills to speak glowingly of the day in Washington where two pipe bombs were placed and nearly 150 officers and uncounted others were injured in clashes with a crowd that breached the barricades of the nation’s capitol. Speakers and attendees included multiple people present at the Capitol Riot, including Siaka Massaqoi, Tony Moon, Christopher Brow and Gina Bisignano. All spoke positively of the event and many hailed Ashli Babbitt, the woman shot by a Capitol policeman after attempting to climb through a smashed window leading to the Speaker’s Lobby. Several interviews with reporters for LCRW showcase the mindset of the Southern California’s far right.

  • In our first installment on the Oath Keepers data dump, we met Ed Durfee Jr and Brett Wynkoop, respectively the membership director and system administrator for the Oath Keepers. When the organization was abruptly deplatformed in the wake of the Capitol riots on January 6, they worked night and day to get the website back online and restore the Oath Keepers' command and control network. Since then the Oath Keepers chat server has been taken offline, leaving many of them back where they were at the beginning of the year - isolated, angry, and alone.

Founder Stewart Rhodes liked to boast that the Oath Keepers' membership numbered over 30,000. Yet only a few rallied to the call last spring. Out of 4500 granted access to their private chat by Wynkoop - or his more dashing online persona, John Paul Jones - fewer than 300 took up the invitation. And for those who did, it wasn’t always smooth sailing.

Today, we examine what happened when Stewart Rhodes replaced the Florida state chapter leader a day after the Capitol riots. John Odell was supposed to bring stability to an organization in crisis, but instead he amassed a trove of social security numbers and concealed carry permits, and granted fully vetted membership status to a 17 year old boy.

California governor Gavin Newsom, facing a recall election on September 14, often refers to the recall effort as a Republican power grab. He’s right—the recall got off the ground thanks to the tireless efforts of Proud Boys, QAnoners and Covid conspiracy theorists, and is heavily funded by MAGA money. But who are the actual candidates running against him?
