Last year the Boogaloo movement provided an ominous taste of one possible future for America. As it struggled to find its identity, new social communities formed online. One of them, Citizen’s Liberty Organization (CLO), contained over 2000 members–all dedicated in varying degrees to the idea of overthrowing the federal government. Today, LCRW can release material which until now had only been available to a few antifascist researchers: the entire database of their Discord server.

Facts surrounding the March 12th killing of Duncan Socrates Lemp by Montgomery County Police Department’s SWAT team are scarce. The police have their version of events. They claim Lemp was plotting violence, had illegal weapons, had a booby-trapped shotgun shell outside his room waiting for the cops and met them with a rifle in his hands. His family said his weapons were legal and he was murdered in bed sleeping next to his girlfriend. Police, for their part, still haven’t released bodycam footage.

The swelling crowd looms up and hits me psychically like a wave I couldn’t tell was too damn big.

    “CHILD LIVES MATTER!”

    “AGAIN!”

    “CHILD LIVES MATTER!

On every corner of Hollywood and Vine, the foam from an internet swell hisses in my ears. I can’t even hear their babble for the semi-coherent conspiracy theories they’re evangelizing. It’s just the wash of the crazy tide. It’s Ten in the fucking morning and it’s over 95 degrees out. There’s hundreds of people. They’re like a single amoebic life form bubbling and grasping everything they can around it. They ritualistically all cross from their street corners into the middle of the intersection when the lights turn red and parade around with all their banners and signs and flags.

“SAVE THE CHILDREN. DESTROY THE PREDATORS,” one sign reads. “#PIZZAGATE,” another reads.

  • It started with the Douglas County Public Library’s relatively benign proposed statement against bigotry.

“The Douglas County Public Library denounces all acts of racism, violence and disregard for human rights. We support #BlackLivesMatter,” the statement reads in part.

“Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help. I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior,” Sheriff Daniel J. Coverley said in a letter to the library’s board of trustees.

  • By now a lot of us are aware of the “Boogaloo Boys”––a seemingly loose-knit group of militiamen and gun enthusiasts who fetishize having a “Civil War II: Electric Boogaloo.” These types first got on the mainstream media’s radar because they showed up to the Virginia Citizens Defense League’s massive gun rally in Richmond way back in January. Reporters were puzzled by attendees wearing Hawaiian shirts under their plate carriers and carrying signs and flags with a cartoon of an igloo on it. “Big Luau,” “Big Igloo” and most recently “Bungalow” are their oronyms of choice to get around social media censoring the word “Boogaloo.”
