    All indications were that antifascists already won before the day even started.

    Richard, a beloved Portland local who shows up to nearly every damn protest, sat down next to me. I asked him how he’s been and he sat down on the bench next to me and started explaining, out of the blue, something I think is called a ‘short rush game’ in American football. The idea, if I’m remembering it right, is you make a bunch of short, quick pushes forward in the first one or two quarters to exhaust the other team and then really go for it in the last half of the game while they’re worn out.

    “Sort of like Muhammad Ali’s rope-a-dope strategy right?” I asked Richard.

    “Yeah,” he said, before getting up to join a bunch of others yelling at some passerby to stop taking pictures of the 300 or so kids decked out in black bloc.

    It was all downhill from there.

    On May 6th, 2021 Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill (SB 90) designed to discourage mail-in voting and to render the administration of vote-by-mail much costlier for individual localities. The signing ceremony for the bill took place at the Majestic Ballroom at the West Palm Beach Airport Hilton, with Fox News, the Trump booster group Club 45, and anti-Muslim political candidate Laura Loomer the only permitted observers.

    A week earlier on April 27th, Loomer co-organized a press conference held clandestinely at the Majestic Ballroom with white nationalist Nick Fuentes. The press conference was about far-right influencers’ and activists’ grievances about being banned from mainstream social media and payment processors. Aggrieved activists in attendance included the embattled Proud Boy chairman and prolific FBI informant Enrique Tarrio, who attended the conference as an honored guest. Tarrio and Loomer then joined other key-note speakers like Newsmax host Michelle Malkin and failed Delaware Senate candidate (and Q-Anon enthusiast) Lauren Witzke in front of a Publix Supermarket in West Palm Beach Gardens.

    Late into the morning on January 6, 2021, about 300 men from the far-right fraternity known as the Proud Boys assembled on the eastern side of the Capitol Building across the street from the Supreme Court. They traveled from as far as Washington State to stop the Democrats from “stealing” the presidential election they presumed Trump would have surely won. How exactly would they negate the millions of votes cast in disfavor of their dear leader, though? They revealed their plot to reinstate Trump directly to a bevy of press photographers and to hundreds of strangers watching their every move via livestream.
